Look up foundations

See a foundation's size and tax filings before you apply.

Steps

  1. Open Find grants and click the Foundations tab.
  2. Search by name or topic, and pick a state to narrow it down.
  3. Click Financials to see the foundation's latest income, spending and assets from its tax filing.
  4. Open the filing itself to see more, including (for most private foundations) the list of groups they gave to.

Tip: A foundation that spends a lot compared to its assets is usually giving actively. That's a good sign.

Where the data comes from

Foundation data comes from ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer, which publishes IRS filings. It can be a year or two behind.
